The President of the Republic of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Defense and Security Forces, presided over the official opening ceremony of the 2026-2027 academic year at the Higher Institute of Military Cadres (ISCAM) on June 12, 2026. The event brought together senior military officials, government authorities, and distinguished guests.
The ceremony was marked by several key activities, including the definitive incorporation of the 55th class of officer cadets, the handover of the academy’s flag between the 51st and 52nd classes, the presentation of diplomas, and the oath-taking ceremony of graduates from the 50th class. The Minister of National Defense and Veterans Affairs, senior military leaders, and other prominent personalities attended the event.
Held under the theme, “ISCAM, Training Future Leaders Capable of Mobilizing Knowledge for National Defense,” the ceremony highlighted the institution’s strategic role in preparing a new generation of competent, disciplined, and dedicated military leaders. A military parade and various demonstrations showcased the professionalism and preparedness of the future officers.
In his address, President Ndayishimiye praised the commitment and determination of Burundian youth to serve their nation. He emphasized that patriotism, discipline, a spirit of sacrifice, and dedication are essential qualities expected of military officers entrusted with leading others and making sound decisions in challenging situations.
The Burundian Head of State urged the officer cadets to pursue excellence and to demonstrate their love for the nation through concrete actions. He stressed that patriotism should be reflected daily in efforts to safeguard national defense, preserve peace and security, and contribute to the country’s development.
President Ndayishimiye also called on the future officers to uphold the legacy of bravery that has long characterized Burundi’s Defense Forces. He noted that this heritage, forged through struggles to defend the nation and resist colonial penetration, should continue to inspire future generations of military leaders to serve their country with honor, integrity, and discipline.
Beyond their traditional defense and security responsibilities, the President highlighted the important role that the Defense Forces can play in promoting the sustainable exploitation of Burundi’s natural resources. Such contributions, he said, would help reduce poverty, create wealth, stimulate economic growth, and accelerate the implementation of Burundi’s vision of becoming an emerging nation by 2040 and a developed country by 2060.
Through this ceremony, Burundi reaffirmed its commitment to building modern, professional, and highly skilled armed forces capable of meeting contemporary security challenges while actively contributing to national development and prosperity.
