Libreville, Gabon – The official visit of the President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, H.E. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, to Gabon concluded on July 25, 2026, with a tour of the country’s flagship infrastructure projects that are reshaping the urban landscape of Libreville. Accompanied by the First Lady, Constancia Mangue de Obiang, the Equatorial Guinean Head of State visited the landmark Baie des Rois and Émeraude Administrative City projects alongside his Gabonese counterpart, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, and First Lady Zita Oligui Nguema.
The visit, held as part of efforts to strengthen the long-standing ties between Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, gave Africa’s longest-serving Head of State the opportunity to witness firsthand the progress of the major structural projects being implemented by the Gabonese authorities as part of their economic and institutional transformation strategy.
Baie des Rois: A Symbol of Gabon’s Future
The first stop on the tour was Baie des Rois, which particularly impressed President Obiang Nguema. Located along Libreville’s waterfront, this vast urban development project aims to transform the Gabonese capital into a regional hub by combining residential neighborhoods, business districts, tourism infrastructure, and recreational areas.
Managed by the Gabonese Strategic Investment Fund (FGIS), the project has now been granted Special Investment Zone (SIZ) status, a mechanism designed to attract greater domestic and international investment. According to the Gabonese authorities, the development is expected to create between 15,000 and 20,000 jobs, with more than 1,200 positions already generated during the construction phase. The future launch of the SIZ one-stop investment center is also expected to enhance Gabon’s economic competitiveness while promoting sustainable urban development.
Émeraude Administrative City: A New Era for Public Administration
The presidential delegation then visited the construction site of the Émeraude Administrative City, located on Boulevard Bessieux. Launched in April 2024, the project is one of the cornerstones of the administrative reform initiated by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
Comprising 14 modern buildings, the administrative complex will bring together several ministries and public institutions on a single site to improve the efficiency of government services. Authorities estimate that the reorganization will generate nearly CFA 30 billion in annual savings by significantly reducing operating costs, particularly those associated with renting office buildings. The first government departments are expected to move into the new facilities as early as July 2026.
A Bilateral Partnership Gaining Momentum
Beyond the infrastructure tour, the visit marked another important milestone in diplomatic relations between Libreville and Malabo. President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo praised Gabon’s efforts to accelerate its modernization and expressed his admiration for the country’s transformation across several strategic sectors.
The two Heads of State reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in infrastructure, economic development, security, cross-border trade, and regional integration, in line with the objectives of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC).
Libreville Reinforces Its Regional Ambitions
The visit concluded with the departure of the Equatorial Guinean presidential couple from the Presidential Pavilion in Libreville, in the presence of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and First Lady Zita Oligui Nguema.
Beyond its diplomatic significance, the visit highlighted the shared determination of Gabon and Equatorial Guinea to build a strategic partnership based on trust, stability, and shared development. By showcasing its flagship infrastructure projects to its Equatorial Guinean neighbor, Gabon reaffirmed its ambition to modernize the country and strengthen its position as one of the key drivers of development in Central Africa.
