A meeting focused on republican continuity and Senegal’s international ambitions

Senegal could experience a significant moment in its institutional life on July 17, with the announced meeting between the President of the Republic, His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and his predecessor, Macky Sall. The former Head of State is expected in Dakar as part of his consultations aimed at strengthening support for his candidacy for a high-level position within the United Nations.

The meeting comes at a time when Macky Sall is pursuing an active diplomatic campaign with several international leaders and personalities to present his vision and seek backing for his ambitions within the UN system. His discussions with the current Senegalese President therefore carry a particular political, diplomatic, and symbolic significance.

Beyond the international race, many observers view this initiative as a demonstration of respect for republican institutions. By seeking the support of the sitting Head of State, Macky Sall acknowledges the central role of the President of the Republic in representing Senegal’s interests and defending its image on the global stage.

This approach also reflects a willingness to place national interests above political differences. In many democracies, issues related to a country’s international influence require the ability to overcome divisions and build consensus around matters of strategic importance.

The potential meeting between the two leaders could therefore send a strong message about Senegal’s democratic maturity. It would demonstrate that political transitions do not prevent institutional cooperation and that former heads of state can continue contributing to their country’s global influence while respecting the authority of current institutions.

For several weeks, Macky Sall has been increasing diplomatic engagements around the world to promote his candidacy and share his vision of Africa’s role within the United Nations system. His return to Dakar is part of this broader effort of consultation and consensus-building around a candidacy that extends beyond his personal ambitions and touches on Senegal’s international standing.

If confirmed, the meeting between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Macky Sall could become a powerful symbol of republican dialogue and continuity of the State. It would reaffirm that a nation’s major international ambitions are built through unity, institutional solidarity, and the collective mobilization of all forces capable of amplifying its voice beyond its borders.

Through this encounter, Senegal could once again demonstrate that, despite political transitions and differences, the defense of its strategic interests remains a shared responsibility aimed at strengthening its influence on the global stage.
