The President of the Republic of Burundi and current Chairperson of the African Union, His Excellency Évariste Ndayishimiye, presided over an important moral guidance session for leaders of the country’s various religious denominations.
A Call to Spiritual Leaders
Held under the theme “The Contribution of Religious Leaders to the Achievement of Burundi Vision 2040–2060”, the meeting provided an opportunity for the Head of State to emphasize the fundamental role that spiritual leaders must play in building a prosperous, united, and resilient nation.
Drawing on the Holy Scriptures and the moral values that underpin Burundian society, President Ndayishimiye encouraged religious leaders to adopt a constructive approach to the challenges of development.
Moving Beyond Complaint and Pessimism
In a strong message, he urged them to abandon the culture of complaint and pessimism, arguing that constant lamentation can cloud the collective vision and prevent citizens from recognizing the progress that has already been achieved.
“Challenges are part of the journey, but they should not cause us to lose sight of the progress made, the opportunities before us, and the many reasons we have to be grateful,” the Head of State stressed, calling on everyone to cultivate hope and gratitude.
Perfection Must Not Block Action
For the Burundian President, the pursuit of absolute perfection should never become an obstacle to action. He reminded participants that every society faces difficulties and imperfections, but that what truly matters is the ability to correct mistakes, learn from obstacles, and continue striving toward established goals.
At the heart of his address, Évariste Ndayishimiye emphasized the special responsibility of religious leaders in supporting communities. As spiritual guides and educators, they are called upon to promote the values of peace, hard work, discipline, solidarity, and patriotism—values that are essential to the success of Burundi’s Vision 2040–2060.
National Mobilization
The meeting forms part of the national mobilization efforts undertaken by the Burundian authorities to involve all segments of society in achieving the country’s development ambitions. Through this call for resilience, gratitude, and civic engagement, President Évariste Ndayishimiye seeks to strengthen the contribution of religious denominations to Burundi’s economic and social transformation.
The President’s message was well received by the religious leaders in attendance, who reaffirmed their willingness to support the government’s efforts to build a more prosperous, stable, and forward-looking Burundi.
