An International Recognition of Her Commitment to Health and Human Development
The First Lady of the Republic of Burundi, Mrs. Angeline Ndayishimiye, is set to receive the 2026 United Nations Population Award, one of the world’s most prestigious honors recognizing individuals and institutions that have made outstanding contributions to population issues, reproductive health, and sustainable human development.
The award acknowledges the First Lady’s remarkable efforts through her Bonne Action Umugiraneza Foundation, which has been actively engaged in combating obstetric fistula, improving maternal and child health, supporting vulnerable communities, and promoting the protection of women and children. Her sustained commitment to women’s empowerment, girls’ education, and the prevention of gender-based violence has earned her growing international recognition.
Since becoming First Lady in 2020, Angeline Ndayishimiye has established herself as one of Africa’s leading advocates for social development. She has championed numerous initiatives aimed at strengthening public health, promoting peace and social cohesion, and advancing the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, helping to position Burundi as an active contributor to global development efforts.
The United Nations Population Award, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981, is among the highest international distinctions in the field of population and development. Each year, it honors individuals and organizations whose work has made a significant impact on population issues, reproductive health, and sustainable development.
This distinction also enhances Burundi’s international standing by recognizing the First Lady’s dedication to improving the lives of the most vulnerable members of society. It reflects global appreciation for her vision of development centered on human dignity, solidarity, equal access to healthcare, and inclusive social progress.
Through this award, the international community highlights the importance of the initiatives undertaken in Burundi to improve the well-being of its people while encouraging continued efforts toward better health outcomes, equal opportunities, and sustainable, inclusive development.
