An Interfaith Prayer Gathering Focused on Peace and Unity
The President of the Republic of Burundi, His Excellency Évariste Ndayishimiye, accompanied by the First Lady, joined the Bagumyabanga in Bujumbura for the traditional monthly interfaith prayer gathering held on the last Thursday of May. The spiritual event, which regularly brings together believers from different religious denominations, was marked by moments of reflection, teaching, and prayers centered on love, unity, and national harmony.
The meditation was based on the biblical passage from 1 John 2:3-11, which calls believers to live in love, walk in the light, and promote peaceful coexistence among all sons and daughters of Burundi. In a country still recovering from past political and social crises, the gathering carried a strong message of reconciliation and national solidarity.
Love for One Another as the Foundation of Social Cohesion
During his sermon, Mr. Hilgie Ngendakumana emphasized the importance of mutual respect and obedience to God’s commandments. Referring to verse 5 of the same chapter — "But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them" — he encouraged worshippers to cultivate empathy, compassion, and solidarity in their daily lives.
According to him, only a society built on love and understanding can establish lasting peace and sustainable development. He urged Burundians to move beyond resentment, ethnic divisions, and painful memories of the past in order to build a united and prosperous future together.
President Ndayishimiye Calls on Citizens to "Walk in the Light"
Addressing the gathering, President Évariste Ndayishimiye called on the Bagumyabanga to embrace exemplary leadership in their families, communities, and institutions. According to the Burundian Head of State, walking in the light means living with truth, integrity, transparency, and righteousness.
He stressed that a leader who walks in the light cannot engage in corruption, spread division, or misuse public resources. The president therefore encouraged political, administrative, and community leaders to serve the nation with honesty and patriotism.
"The light drives away darkness," he declared, urging every citizen to become an agent of peace, justice, and unity within society.
Promoting Burundian Identity Beyond Divisions
President Ndayishimiye also highlighted the importance of strengthening Burundian identity beyond ethnic, regional, or political divisions. He noted that Burundi’s cultural values — including ubuntu, solidarity, mutual assistance, and respect for elders — remain a valuable heritage that must be preserved and passed on to future generations.
He encouraged the Bagumyabanga to become ambassadors of these values both within the country and abroad. In a world increasingly challenged by social fragmentation and identity conflicts, the president believes that national unity remains essential for sustainable development.
Bagumyabanga Encouraged to Support National Development
Beyond its spiritual dimension, the monthly gathering also serves as a platform to remind influential leaders and officials of their responsibilities toward the nation’s development. The Bagumyabanga, regarded as key supporters of the presidential vision, were urged to actively contribute to Burundi’s economic and social transformation.
President Ndayishimiye called on them to take the lead in implementing development projects, particularly in agriculture, education, healthcare, and infrastructure. According to him, Burundi’s progress depends on the collective commitment of its leaders and citizens.
Faith as a Tool for National Reconciliation
Burundi continues its gradual recovery from years of political instability and insecurity. In this context, interfaith prayers have become important symbols of dialogue, forgiveness, and reconciliation among the population.
By regularly participating in such spiritual gatherings, Évariste Ndayishimiye demonstrates his belief that faith and moral values can play a central role in rebuilding the nation. These meetings encourage Burundians to forgive one another and work together toward a more peaceful and stable future.
The First Lady’s Commitment to Social Causes
The presence of the First Lady alongside the president also drew attention during the gathering. Known for her involvement in social initiatives such as the fight against HIV/AIDS, girls’ education, and support for vulnerable communities, she continues to play an important role in promoting social welfare and national unity.
Through their joint participation in prayer, the presidential couple projected an image of solidarity and commitment to serving the Burundian people.
A Prayer for Burundi’s Future
This end-of-May interfaith prayer gathering will be remembered as a moment of spiritual reflection and national hope. The teachings drawn from the First Epistle of John reminded participants that love for one another is not optional but lies at the heart of Christian values.
Through his speech and presence, President Ndayishimiye once again reaffirmed that Burundi’s development depends on unity, integrity, and the active involvement of all citizens. He urged the Bagumyabanga to leave the gathering transformed and ready to spread peace, hope, and solidarity throughout the country.
Ultimately, the success of such messages will depend not only on speeches, but on the concrete actions and attitudes of every citizen toward their fellow human beings.
