The celebration of Africa Day in Brazzaville will go down in history as a landmark moment for the continent. During festivities held on May 25, 2026, on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the African Development Bank, Congolese President Denis Sassou-N’Guesso announced the removal of entry visas for all African citizens beginning January 1, 2027.

The historic declaration, made before several heads of state, diplomats, and thousands of participants gathered in the Congolese capital, marks a major turning point in Africa’s continental integration agenda. It comes at a time when several African countries are pursuing policies aimed at strengthening free movement, regional trade, and African unity.

A strong commitment to African integration

Through this bold decision, the Republic of the Congo seeks to position itself as a key driver of continental integration. President Denis Sassou-Nguesso explained that the measure aligns with the vision of the African Union and the objectives of Agenda 2063, which aims to build an integrated, prosperous, and united Africa.

“Africa must be built by breaking down the barriers that divide us. The visa is a colonial legacy that we must move beyond,” the Congolese leader declared to loud applause.

With this announcement, Congo joins a growing group of African nations such as Rwanda, Benin, the Seychelles, and The Gambia, which have already eased or abolished visa requirements for African travelers.

Distinguished African leaders attend the ceremony

The Africa Day celebrations in Brazzaville brought together several prominent African personalities. Among them was Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, alongside the Vice-President of the African Union Commission, Selma Malika Haddadi, who represented the continental institution.

Also present was AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah, while the current Chairperson of the African Union, Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, addressed participants via video conference.

In his speech broadcast on giant screens, President Ndayishimiye delivered a powerful message about Africa’s place in the global order.

“Africa is not asking for charity; Africa is asking for fairness and justice,” he stated, while also calling for accelerated implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area to transform Africa into a true common market.

Tribute to the heroes of Pan-Africanism

In an emotional address, Denis Sassou-Nguesso paid tribute to the great African independence leaders and pan-African figures who fought for the liberation of the continent.

The Congolese president notably honored Kwame Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba, Thomas Sankara, and Amílcar Cabral, describing them as men who sacrificed their lives for Africa’s freedom and dignity.

“Great men never truly die,” he declared, urging African youth to draw inspiration from these heroes in building the Africa of tomorrow.

AfDB Annual Meetings provide the broader context

Beyond the celebrations, Brazzaville is hosting the 2026 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank from May 25 to May 29 at the Kintelé Conference Center.

More than 3,000 delegates from across Africa and beyond are attending the event under the theme: “Mobilizing Large-Scale Resources for Africa’s Development Financing in a Fragmented World.”

The discussions focus on major economic challenges facing the continent, including infrastructure financing, industrialization, regional integration, and strategies to strengthen Africa’s resilience amid global geopolitical and financial uncertainty.

    AfDB praises Congo’s “visionary” initiative

AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah welcomed Congo’s decision as “courageous and visionary,” emphasizing that easier mobility would significantly boost intra-African trade, tourism, and investment.

According to him, cumbersome visa procedures remain one of the biggest obstacles to continental commerce and entrepreneurship. By removing this barrier, Congo is sending a strong message to African investors, businesses, and travelers.

The African Development Bank also expressed its readiness to support Congo in implementing the reform through border management modernization, digital systems harmonization, and training for immigration officials.

A major step toward a borderless Africa

Africa Day 2026 may ultimately be remembered as the moment when Congo took a decisive step toward a more united continent. By abolishing visas for all Africans starting in 2027, Denis Sassou-Nguesso has made a powerful political statement in favor of African solidarity and integration.

If successfully implemented, citizens from countries such as Senegal, Kenya, Morocco, or Cameroon will soon be able to travel to Congo with nothing more than a passport.

For many observers, this initiative could inspire other African states to follow suit and bring the continent one step closer to the long-envisioned dream of a united and borderless Africa.
