Investigations into the Large-Scale Gold Looting in Cameroon: Between Allegations, Unanswered Questions, and the Need for the Truth

The debate surrounding the looting of Cameroon’s mineral resources has taken a new turn. While some officials have suggested that members of the country’s defense and security forces were involved in gold trafficking, other voices argue that such a narrative is incomplete and risks diverting attention from the real criminal networks behind the illicit trade.

According to testimonies attributed to certain police officers, gendarmes, and customs officials, they were allegedly instructed not to inspect aircraft cargo holds or the luggage of certain flight crew members. These same testimonies claim that individuals transporting Cameroonian gold and foreign currency presented documents purportedly issued by high-ranking state institutions or the Ministry of Mines, allowing them to pass through checkpoints without inspection.

If these allegations are confirmed through independent judicial investigations, they would point to the existence of a sophisticated criminal network relying on forged official documents—or even possible administrative complicity—to bypass security controls and facilitate the illegal export of the country’s mineral wealth.

In this context, many observers argue that it would be unfair to place the blame solely on the defense and security forces when some officers claim they were confronted with what appeared to be official authorizations or instructions from higher authorities. Individual responsibility should be established on the basis of credible evidence, avoiding broad generalizations or unsupported accusations.

The illegal trafficking of gold represents a significant loss for Cameroon’s economy. Lost tax revenues, depleted foreign exchange reserves, and reduced investment opportunities weaken the mining sector and deprive the country of resources that could otherwise finance infrastructure, healthcare, education, and national development.

Given the seriousness of these allegations, there are growing calls for a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation capable of identifying everyone involved, regardless of their rank, position, or influence. The objective is to dismantle any criminal networks, prosecute those responsible under the law, and strengthen oversight mechanisms governing the export of mineral resources.

In a state governed by the rule of law, only a fair and evidence-based investigation can determine responsibility. Allegations of this magnitude must be examined with rigor and impartiality so that the truth can emerge and Cameroon’s natural wealth can genuinely serve the interests of its people.
