Mali and the United States are demonstrating their determination to give fresh impetus to their bilateral relations. On Friday, July 17, 2026, Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, His Excellency Abdoulaye DIOP, received an important American delegation led by Frank GARCIA, United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, on a working visit to Bamako.
This high-level meeting is part of a dynamic of strengthened dialogue between the two countries, with the ambition of building cooperation more firmly geared toward results, investment and mutually beneficial interests.
At the heart of the discussions were the main areas of bilateral cooperation. The two delegations explored ways to intensify economic, commercial and human exchanges, while placing particular emphasis on productive investments capable of supporting local transformation, job creation and Mali’s sustainable development.
Minister Abdoulaye DIOP welcomed the new orientation of American policy toward Africa, which favours an economic partnership based on mutual respect and reciprocal benefits. On this occasion, he recalled the paradigm shift undertaken by the Malian authorities, who now place sovereignty, respect for national choices and balanced partnerships at the heart of their diplomacy.
Beyond economic matters, the discussions also addressed regional and international issues. The two parties exchanged views on cooperation within the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), the security situation in the region as well as the challenges linked to the fight against terrorism. They reaffirmed the principle of the indivisibility of security, stressing that no State can address alone the security challenges affecting the Sahel.
At the end of this working session, Bamako and Washington welcomed the quality of their political dialogue, marked by regular high-level consultations. Both parties expressed their shared willingness to continue these exchanges in order to strengthen cooperation founded on trust, respect for reciprocal interests and a shared understanding of current challenges.
This meeting illustrates Mali’s determination to diversify and consolidate its international partnerships while respecting its sovereignty, and to open new prospects for economic and strategic cooperation with the United States.
