Bujumbura, Burundi – The President of the Republic of Burundi and current Chairperson of the African Union, His Excellency Évariste Ndayishimiye, received a high-level delegation from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on Monday at the Ntare Rushatsi Palace. The meeting forms part of ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting dialogue, peace, and stability in the Great Lakes region.
The Congolese delegation was composed of leaders of opposition political parties and representatives of the country’s major religious denominations. Discussions focused on the political and security situation in the DRC, as well as prospects for an inclusive dialogue capable of fostering lasting peace and national reconciliation.
Following the meeting, President Évariste Ndayishimiye expressed his satisfaction with the quality of the discussions, describing them as open, frank, and conducted in a spirit of mutual trust. He reaffirmed that constructive dialogue remains the most effective path to overcoming differences and building sustainable national reconciliation.
The Burundian Head of State also emphasized the importance of preserving unity among all segments of Congolese society, stressing that only an inclusive approach can effectively address the challenges currently facing the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In his capacity as Chairperson of the African Union, President Ndayishimiye welcomed the shared commitment expressed by the delegation to work towards stability, peace, and security, not only in the DRC but across the entire Great Lakes region.
The meeting comes at a time when diplomatic initiatives are intensifying to support efforts aimed at restoring peace in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The involvement of the African Union, alongside regional organizations and international partners, highlights the importance of pursuing lasting political solutions to the persistent security challenges affecting the region.
By receiving representatives of the Congolese political opposition and the country’s major religious leaders, President Évariste Ndayishimiye reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to fostering inclusive dialogue among all stakeholders. Such dialogue is widely regarded as a key instrument for strengthening national cohesion, consolidating peace, and promoting long-term stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
