Under the leadership of President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has recorded significant progress in the security sector, reflecting a determined commitment to ending decades of instability in the eastern part of the country. The national defense budget has increased dramatically, rising from $248 million to $1.5 billion, providing the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) with the financial resources needed to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity.
On the diplomatic front, the Head of State has pursued an active and sustained diplomatic strategy, culminating in the signing of the Washington Peace Agreement with Rwanda in June 2025. Hailed as a major step toward peace for the long-suffering populations of eastern DRC, the agreement reaffirms respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC while establishing a joint security coordination mechanism.
Political leaders and youth organizations have praised these efforts, arguing that this proactive diplomacy brings the country closer to ending more than three decades of conflict.
At the same time, initiatives such as the Local Development Program for the 145 Territories are helping to consolidate peace through grassroots development and community transformation. Meanwhile, efforts continue to neutralize armed groups and facilitate the safe return of internally displaced persons, reinforcing the government’s commitment to achieving lasting peace and stability across the country.
