Bujumbura, July 1, 2026 – Burundi celebrated this Wednesday the 64th anniversary of its accession to independence in an atmosphere marked by patriotic fervor, solemn remembrance and national pride. Held under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, Évariste Ndayishimiye, the festivities paid a vibrant tribute to the heroes of independence while reaffirming the authorities’ determination to continue building a united, sovereign Burundi resolutely turned toward the future.
The day began with a moment of great solemnity at the mausoleum of Prince Louis Rwagasore, an emblematic figure of the independence struggle and a national hero. Accompanied by First Lady Angeline Ndayishimiye and the highest state authorities, the Head of State laid a wreath in tribute to the man who embodies the struggle for Burundi’s freedom and sovereignty.
In an atmosphere of reflection, the authorities honored the memory of the pioneers of independence whose sacrifices continue to inspire current generations. This symbolic gesture recalled the importance of preserving the country’s historical heritage and transmitting to young people the values of patriotism, courage and national responsibility.
The official ceremonies then continued at Independence Square, where a second wreath was laid. Before a large crowd that came to take part in the celebrations, this moment illustrated the gratitude of an entire nation toward those who contributed to Burundi’s emancipation.
On the eve of the celebrations, President Évariste Ndayishimiye, also African Union Champion for Youth, had taken part in the commemorative vigil “Umutwenzi Festival,” organized at ETS Kamenge by the Collective of Burundian Artists. This cultural evening, marked by musical performances, traditional dances, poems and various artistic expressions, brought together political leaders, artists, young people and citizens in an atmosphere of national communion.
Speaking on that occasion, the Head of State welcomed the fact that Burundians are showing ever stronger attachment to their country. He praised the spirit of solidarity and unity demonstrated by the artists, stressing that these values form the foundation of national identity and remain essential to consolidating social cohesion.
President Ndayishimiye also paid tribute to artists who actively contribute to the country’s economic development by investing in agriculture and livestock farming alongside their cultural activities. According to him, this complementarity illustrates a vision of development in which culture, work and production together contribute to Burundi’s rise.
In his message to the nation, the Head of State urged musicians and cultural actors to continue putting their talent at the service of promoting Burundian culture, strengthening patriotism and preserving the values that shape the country’s identity. He invited all citizens to follow the example of the heroes of independence in order to build a prosperous, united and sovereign Burundi.
Throughout this historic day, the cities of Bujumbura, Gitega and several other localities vibrated to the rhythm of popular festivities. Parades, concerts, traditional dances and cultural activities mobilized thousands of Burundians, while national colors adorned public buildings, squares and neighborhoods, reflecting pride in belonging to the Burundian nation.
Beyond the historical celebration, this 64th anniversary also provided an opportunity for the authorities to highlight progress recorded in recent years in several sectors, including institutional stability, agricultural development, economic recovery and the strengthening of social cohesion. These advances are part of the vision carried by President Évariste Ndayishimiye, who aims to make Burundi a more prosperous, more resilient country and one more in control of its destiny.
This day of commemoration will therefore remain a strong moment of collective memory, recognition of the heroes of independence and hope for the future.
